Chapter 9 Missed Messages and Sad Goodbyes Today, Olivia would be visiting the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. She would have personalized tours of each of these places. Her day would come to an end around 6pm this evening. Olivia finally saw the light on the phone in her hotel room. Quickly she retrieved the message. She heard Brian’s voice on the other end of the phone and the relaxed mood she had been in since her arrival in Amsterdam, suddenly faded. She sat on the edge of the bed feeling sad and lonely. When she replayed the message, she listened to the time and date the message arrived. Now she felt awful because she discovered it had arrived around the same time she did at the hotel. She was so wrapped up with Clive; she hadn’t paid any attention to the phone. She attempted calling Brian, she figured it was only 2am back home, perhaps he’d still be up working on his case. After each ring, Olivia began getting a message together in her mind. As she suspected the call went to voicemail. Olivia started to speak. “Hey you, I know it’s only 2am there, but I just got your message.” Olivia got dressed and packed up her belongings (being sure to grab the soaps and lotions!) and went down to the lobby. She asked the young woman at the front desk to use the phone. As she was dialing the number she felt a slight tap on her shoulder. She turned and there behind her was Clive. “Good morning Olivia” Clive said. “Hey there, I was just about to call your room, and here you are!” Olivia replied. “Yea, I want to get an early start on the day. I have to pick up the puppy and then have my journey back home to look forward to.” Olivia handed Clive her business card. “Please take my card and keep in touch, I want to see pictures of that new puppy!” she told him. Clive took Olivia’s card and tucked it safely away in his wallet. Taking a hotel brochure, he jotted down his name, address, phone number and email address. He handed the pamphlet to Olivia. “I will keep in touch only if you promise to also” he said. The two said their goodbyes and both felt a little sad. It was strange, they had only known each other for a day, but somehow it seemed like a lifetime. Brian had just woken up and checked his phone messages. He heard Olivia’s message and was surprised to hear about her new friend. Jacqueline, now awake, asked Brian why he was looking so depressed. “I just checked my phone messages, there was one from Olivia.” Brian told her. “Oh, really? How is her trip going? How does she sound?” Jacqueline inquired. Brian told her what he had heard in the message. “So, it seems like she found a friend, Clive is his name, apparently a nice British man.” He said. “Well, at least she is having fun!” Jacqueline joked, seeing the depressed look on Brian’s face. “I’m sure it is totally innocent, probably just a nice guy looking for someone to talk to,” she said trying to comfort him. After having tours in some of Amsterdam’s biggest tourist attractions, Olivia’s time in the city was coming to an end. She really enjoyed seeing the Rijksmuseum and to have a personal guide was fantastic! She found the Anne Frank house to be a very moving place, having read the book and studied this chapter of history in school, it was very emotional to be standing in the very house where Anne Frank once lived. The Van Gogh tour ended and Olivia was escorted back to the hotel. She picked up her luggage, and got a taxi to the train station. Around 7:30pm, Olivia boarded the train that would take her to her last destination, Munich. |
