The train pulled into Euston station and the Railroad Warriors were full of excitement. They were sure they knew exactly who they were looking for, and the location in which to find the next clue. Anxiously the four took to the street. They walked down the streets of London, taking in the sights along the way. The city was alive and bustling as it always is, and the team was in luck, the weather couldn't have been more beautiful!
Wings to Win arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport and ran to the nearest ticket counter. They explained they needed to board the next flight to London. The agent behind the counter pulled up the information as far as the schedule was concerned.
In a thick French accent, the woman began to speak.
"There is a flight leaving in an hour, there appears to be seats left on the flight, would you like to purchase tickets?" she asked.
Each of the four air team members pulled out the cards they were given at the start of the race. This card was to be presented throughout the journey at the ticket counter in the airport to advise that there should be no charge for the team, any costs accrued should be noted and billed accordingly to the listed contact.
Alex was sure to advise the major airports within Europe of the race and had supplied copies of the ID cards the team would be presenting upon arrival at the airport so there were no problems or surprises.
The ticket agent had no idea what to do with the card being shown to her. She called for her manager and this was causing a delay in the team getting to the gate to board the flight.
At this point in the race, the car team was the furthest behind. They were en-route to France on a ferry that was taking forever. Luck, however, was on their side. The ferry captain broadcast the following announcement:
"Good Afternoon, this is your captain speaking. We have a passenger on board that requires immediate medical attention. I regret to inform you all that we must turned the ship around and return to Cork. Judging by the weather and my navigation maps, we should arrive back in about two hours."
The announcement was repeated in a few languages, reaching most of the passengers on board.
The car team looked at each other and were thrilled. They could now get back to Cork, drive back to Dublin, catch another ferry to
Holyhead, then drive their way to London. It was quite a trip ahead of them, but not going all the way to Roscoff would save them some valuable time. Their hope right now was that the other two teams had also made a mistake and they too were having to scramble making plans to reach the destination.
As they approached the magnificent structure, the four rail members stood in awe. None of them had been to the cathedral before and it truly was a site to behold. After snapping a few pictures, they raced up the stairs and entered.
Ainsley was thrilled to be inside St. Paul's Cathedral. Ever since she was a little girl, she was a huge fan of Disney's Mary Poppins. Her favorite part of the film was when the bird woman fed the birds. Ainsley was well aware that the bird woman sat on the steps of St. Paul's to feed the birds and so this first stop would be a very memorable one for her!
The Railroad Warriors approached the information desk. They advised who they were and what they were searching for.
Jeffrey spoke up on behalf of the team. "We are looking for the resting place of Gordon Hamilton-Fairley. We understand that he was laid to rest within the cathedral. Is there a map or guide you could lend us to find this spot?"
The man behind the information desk, Karl, stood up and advised that he could take the four to the place in question.
"Thank you so much, your help is much appreciated" Pelagia said to Karl.
The group followed Karl down the main entrance and through a side entry. It seemed like a maze to the team, but finally, they reached it. Gordon Hamilton-Fairley's resting spot, well-known Professor of Oncology.
Beneath the wall plaque was a small stack of envelopes. The team was thrilled to find that there were still three of them in the stack, that meant that they were the first team to retrieve the clue.
Quickly they opened the envelope, the card inside read:
Clue #2
Congratulations on reaching this clue, it goes to show what good team-work can do.
To reach the next clue you must cross a body but it's closer than you think. A place for learning, where treatment, research and teaching all share a common link. Europe's leading center of this kind, you can figure this one out, just use your mind.
The team thanked Karl for his assistance and the headed towards the exit. Before leaving the grounds of St. Paul's, the team got a group shot on the steps of the cathedral. Of course, they were on video as well as they had their camera guy tagging along! Excellent footage for television when the show aired!
The Railroad Warriors headed down the street in search of a library. They needed to start researching where they would need to go to next.
Finally after about 20 minutes of waiting for a manager to show up, the air team received their boarding passes and ran to the gate. Just in time, they made it on the plane. They were off to London to get their clue.
Drive to Survive made it back to Cork and drove to Dublin. The boarded the ferry to Holyhead where they would need to pick up their next car. It would take roughly 6 hours to drive from Holyhead to London, the team was not looking forward to the long trip.
Excitement was building once more among all three teams. The rail team looked online, searched through books and did all they could to try to figure out the next clue. The air team sat patiently on the plane awaiting landing. They were sure they knew where to go this time! And the car team sat on the ferry, everyone was pretty quiet. They were not angry with each other just yet, but the mood was getting more and more tense as the hours passed by.
