Birth of Rome Celebrations – Each year the Romans celebrate the birth of their Eternal City (21 April), founded by Romulus in 753BC, with a series of events at venues throughout Rome. These venues include the Roman Forum and the Campidoglio. Long-burning candles cover the Aventine Hill and there is an epic firework display over the Tiber. Other celebrations consist of parades, gladiator shows, traditional Roman banquets and public speeches from various local historical societies. |

Saint George's Day – Last issue of Explorer presented Saint George's Day in Barcelona, this issue, another variation of this day, in another country! The life of England's patron saint, shrouded in legend, is celebrated each year in the historic town of Salisbury with street theater, pageantry, dancing, wandering minstrels and ferocious dragons!
The story we know today of Saint George and the Dragon dates back to the 14th century. In the story, a dragon is terrorizing the villages near Silena, in Libya. Crowds are drawn in local villages, and maidens fed to the dragon to keep the peace. Saint George kills the dragon with a single blow from his lance, and then converts the locals to Christianity. Bring the family and join in the fun to honor Saint George! |
